It was on Thursday the 18-member women’s hockey team under the captaincy of goalkeeper Savita Punia was announced for the upcoming 2022 Commonwealth Games that is scheduled to begin on Thursday 28th July 2022.
This time star striker Rani Rampal will miss the squad after failing to regain full fitness due to an injury.
The experienced defender Deep Grace Ekka will be deputy captain, where both the captain and vice-captain will lead the team for the World Cup to be co-hosted by the Netherlands and Spain from 1st July to 17th July 2022.
For the CWG 2022 event, India is placed in Pool A along with England, Canada, Wales, and Ghana where the first match will be contested against Ghana on July 29th. Chief Coach Janneke Schopman stated about the team selection “We have chosen an experienced side for the Commonwealth Games and the Players believe they have a good shot at a medal this time.”
It was in the last edition the Savita Punia-led women in blue finished with improved performance at fourth position after getting defeated against England in the Bronze medal match.
It is for the upcoming Women’s Hockey CWG squad there have been made only three changes from the World Cup team. Bichu Devi Kharibam is replaced by Rani Etimarpu as a number two goalkeeper while another World Cup team member Sonika (midfielder) was left out from the CWG squad. Also, one of the replacement players for the world cup, Sangita Kumari Forward player of the World Cup is placed as a full member of the CWG Women’s team.
